Huila Department Growing Region (Colombia)

Huila Department (southwestern Colombia; elevation 1,400-2,100m; ~130,000 coffee-farming families; ~2M 60-kg bags/year production) is Colombia's single most productive Arabica coffee region — accounting for ~20-25% of total Colombian output. Huila's micro-climate (tropical highland with bimodal rainfall — two flowering seasons per year) enables twice-annual harvests, giving Colombian coffee year-round availability. Huila is especially associated with high-cup-quality, specialty-grade Arabica (SCA scores 85+) that commands significant price premiums over commodity C-contract pricing. The 2021 La Niña event caused excessive rainfall across Huila and other Colombian growing regions (March-June 2021) — flooding farms, preventing fruit maturation, and causing ~12% year-on-year production decline.
