Colorado River Aqueduct (Metropolitan Water District)
Colorado River Aqueduct (CRA; 242 miles; completed 1941; operated by Metropolitan Water District of Southern California) pumps Colorado River water from Lake Havasu (Whitsett Intake Pumping Plant, Parker AZ) over five mountain ranges — San Jacinto, Chuckwalla, Eagle, Sheep Hole, and Iron Mountains — delivering water to MWD's Weymouth Water Treatment Plant in LaVerne, CA for distribution to Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, and Riverside. The CRA lifts water 1,617 vertical feet using five pumping plants, consuming approximately 2 billion kWh/year. Capacity: up to 1.25 MAF/yr. In 2022, MWD curtailed CRA deliveries and relied on Diamond Valley Lake storage, groundwater banking, and State Water Project transfers as Colorado River shortage declarations reduced CRA entitlements.
