Natural sodium nitrate extracted from caliche ore (a mineral crust in Atacama Desert soils). Operations in Norte Grande region. Caliche NaNO3 is the only commercial natural nitrate source; Chile holds the world's entire exploitable reserve. This chemistry was the basis of the 19th-century Saltpeter War (War of the Pacific, 1879-1884) between Chile, Peru, and Bolivia.
