Chevron Phillips Chemical Natural Mercaptans Plant (Port Arthur, TX)

CPChem's Port Arthur, TX facility is the primary North American mercaptan production site, producing tert-butyl mercaptan (TBM), ethyl mercaptan (EM), and blended odorant products (Scentinel® brand). Port Arthur is a major Gulf Coast petrochemical hub; CPChem's mercaptan production benefits from proximity to sulfur byproducts from refinery operations and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from natural gas processing. The facility supplies TBM and EM to US and Canadian natural gas utilities and LDCs. Hurricane exposure (Port Arthur was severely flooded during Hurricane Harvey 2017) represents a physical disruption risk for North American mercaptan supply.
