Jien Nickel Jinchuan Complex — Cobalt Byproduct (Gansu, China)
Jinchuan nickel-cobalt-copper complex in Jinchang, Gansu Province — China's largest nickel sulfide mining and refining operation. Cobalt is recovered as a byproduct during nickel refining via solvent extraction. The Jinchuan deposit contains one of the world's largest cobalt sulfide reserves. Jien's cobalt sulfate output (~3-5% global share) is the most geographically independent major cobalt source: derived from a domestic Chinese nickel mine rather than DRC imports.
