Facility
Michoacán, Mexico avocado production region
The Purépecha Plateau region of Michoacán, Mexico (Uruapan, Tancítaro, Peribán municipalities) produces approximately 44% of world avocado supply and 73% of Mexico's avocado output. Mexico supplies 88% of US avocado imports, meaning this single Mexican state produces the majority of avocados consumed in the United States. The region was the sole USDA-authorized avocado export origin to the US from the late 1990s until Jalisco was added in July 2022. Michoacán's avocado industry (Hass variety primarily) operates year-round at altitude 1,500-2,400m; the Purépecha Plateau's climate produces the highest-quality Hass avocados. The region is also heavily affected by the Knights Templar and CJNG cartels, which have extorted producers, taxed shipments, and threatened USDA inspection personnel.
