Facility
Standard Steel — Burnham, Pennsylvania (Sole NA Wheel Forge)
Operating continuously since 1795 — one of the oldest industrial facilities in the United States; original iron forge in the Juniata River Valley. Produces forged steel wheels, axles, side frames, and bolsters for all North American railroads. 100% of North American forged wheel supply from a single facility in a 7,000-person town in central Pennsylvania. No other facility in North America can manufacture AAR-spec forged steel wheels for mainline freight service. Nippon Steel subsidiary since 2012. A prolonged labor action, flood, or facility damage would immediately create a national rail wheel supply crisis.
