Sumatra Palm Belt (Riau, North Sumatra, South Sumatra)

Sumatra is Indonesia's oldest and most established palm oil producing island, with approximately 8.1 million hectares of planted oil palm. Riau Province (east-central Sumatra) is the single largest palm oil producing province in Indonesia with approximately 3.5 million hectares — contributing approximately 23% of Indonesia's total CPO production. North Sumatra is the historic heart of plantation agriculture in Indonesia with colonial-era estates dating to early 20th century. South Sumatra contains significant peatland areas cleared for oil palm — a primary source of the catastrophic 2015 Sumatra/Kalimantan fires. Golden Agri-Resources (GAR), Wilmar, and state plantation company PTPN (Perkebunan Nusantara) are major operators. Sumatra FFB output is processed at approximately 700+ registered mills and transported primarily via road and river to port cities (Dumai, Belawan) for CPO export.
