Optically Variable Pigments (OVP) for Currency Security
Thin-film interference pigments that produce color-shifting optical effects (copper-to-green, gold-to-silver) used in security inks and coatings to authenticate banknotes and government documents. OVP is the active component in the color-shifting numerals and security marks visible on USD $100 bills, EUR banknotes, and approximately 90 other world currencies. Manufactured through a complex vacuum thin-film deposition process. Primary global suppliers: VIAVI Solutions OSP (San Jose, CA), Giesecke+Devrient (Munich), OVD Kinegram (Leonhard Kurz, Germany). OVP is subsequently formulated into security inks by SICPA Holdings (Switzerland) and other specialist printers, then applied to currency substrates at government mints and printing bureaus.
