Generation 3 Night Vision Image Intensifier Tubes (I²T)

Gen 3 image intensifier tubes are the core photocathode technology enabling US military night vision goggle (NVG) capability, particularly the AN/PVS-14 monocular and AN/AVS-6 aviator NVG. Gen 3 tubes use gallium arsenide (GaAs) photocathodes for superior performance in low-light conditions. US export control (ITAR, EAR) restricts Gen 3 tube exports. Primary manufacturers: L3Harris Night Vision (Roanoke VA), Elbit Systems of America, and a small number of others. Supply is heavily constrained by the photocathode manufacturing process; DoD has repeatedly faced NVG readiness shortfalls during high-demand periods (post-9/11 surge, Ukraine support).
