Transformer Insulation Paper & Pressboard (Kraft)

Thermally upgraded kraft (TUK) paper and pressboard are the primary solid insulation in oil-filled power transformers. Cellulose fibers provide electrical insulation between windings and structural support for the transformer's active parts. Thermally upgraded paper (treated with nitrogen stabilizers) operates continuously at 130°C vs standard 105°C — extending transformer life to 40+ years. Weidmann Electrical Technology is the dominant global supplier (~45% market share); competitors include ABB (some internal), SMIT Transformers, and smaller regional suppliers. Pressboard cylinders, angle rings, and sectors form complex 3D insulation structures designed to field-grade specifications. Critical: if insulation quality is compromised, transformer flashover and catastrophic failure follows.
