Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle E— Reserve Components › Part II— PERSONNEL GENERALLY › Chapter 1219— STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES FOR RETENTION AND PROMOTION › § 12642
Reserve commissioned officers must earn the number of points each year that their service Secretary sets, and the Secretary of Defense must approve that number for military departments. The Secretary cannot set a minimum higher than 50 points. Officers must also meet any other standards the Secretary requires. Except as section 12645 allows, if an officer fails to get the points or meet the standards, then if they are qualified and apply they go to the Retired Reserve; if not but eligible they go to inactive status; if neither, they are discharged. This rule does not cover commissioned warrant officers or state, Puerto Rico, or D.C. adjutants general and assistant adjutants general.
