When a reserve officer of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps who is on active status or on an inactive‑status list reaches the maximum age shown in section 14509, 14510, 14511, or 14512 for their grade or position, the officer must, unless separated earlier, separation deferred, or continued on active status by another law, by not later than the last day of the month in which the officer reaches that maximum age either be transferred to the Retired Reserve if qualified and not requesting otherwise under rules set by the service secretary, or be discharged if not qualified or if they request not to transfer.
