Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle A— General Military Law › Part II— PERSONNEL › Chapter 76— MISSING PERSONS › § 1502
When a commander learns that a person described in section 1501(c) — someone whose location is unknown and whose absence may be involuntary — might be missing, the commander must make a quick assessment. If the commander concludes the person is missing, they must recommend missing status and, within 10 days of learning the information, send a report with that recommendation to the Secretary concerned under the procedures in section 1501(b). An advisory copy must also go to the theater component commander with jurisdiction. The commander must protect and forward any information found during the assessment or search for official use, following the procedures in section 1501.
