§20110 Strength in Grade: Space Force General Officers in a Space Force Active Status, Not on Sustained Duty

Summary

Only five Space Force general officers may be on active Space Force status and not on sustained duty at the same time. Officers counted under section 526 and up to two officers serving in joint duty under chapter 38 do not count toward that five. No officer can be permanently lowered in rank because the authorized number drops. The five-officer limit does not apply for 60 days after an officer leaves a joint or other non‑joint active assignment. The Secretary of Defense can allow the Secretary of the Air Force to extend that 60-day period by 120 more days, but no more than three officers can have that extension at the same time.
