After finishing the first year of a four‑year Senior ROTC course, a student who is not eligible for advanced training under section 2104 and not appointed under section 2107 may sign a contract with the military Secretary or a representative to serve the required period. The student must agree in writing to accept a commission if offered. To sign the contract and get the subsistence allowance under section 209(c) of title 37, the student must be a citizen of the United States, enlist for the period the Secretary requires, and either sign a loyalty certificate the Secretary of Defense sets or take a loyalty oath the Secretary sets. Minors need a parent or guardian’s consent.
