Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle A— General Military Law › Part III— TRAINING AND EDUCATION › Chapter 106A— EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE FOR PERSONS ENLISTING FOR ACTIVE DUTY › § 2146
A service member who already has education benefits and reenlists at the end of the enlistment that gave them those benefits can choose, when reenlisting, to take a one-time lump-sum payment instead of the education benefits. That choice can’t be changed. The lump sum is exactly 60% of the total of two amounts measured at the time of reenlistment: (1) the education-assistance rate for that member times the number of standard academic years of entitlement, and (2) the full-time subsistence allowance rate times the number of months of entitlement to that allowance.
