The Secretary of Defense can use Department of Defense aircraft to fly veterans between American Samoa and Hawaii when the trip is needed so they can get hospital care. To be eligible, a veteran must live in American Samoa, and a VA official chosen by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs must say the veteran needs hospital care in Hawaii that they are entitled to under chapter 17 of title 38 at VA facilities there. Flights are only on a space-available basis, and veterans are not charged for the transportation.
