Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle A— General Military Law › Part IV— SERVICE, SUPPLY, AND PROPERTY › Chapter 169— MILITARY CONSTRUCTION AND MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING › Subchapter II— MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING › § 2835a
The Secretary can put service members who have no dependents into family housing that was built and leased for military families, if that housing is not needed for families. Those service members live there rent-free and are treated like they are assigned government quarters for pay and allowances. If the housing is not needed long-term for families, the Secretary can change the family housing lease into a long-term lease for unaccompanied housing. The new lease cannot go past the time left on the original lease. The Secretary must wait 14 days after sending an electronic notice to the relevant congressional committees before making the change. This also covers housing first acquired under the old "Build to Lease" program.
