Title 10 › Subtitle A — General Military Law › PART IV — SERVICE, SUPPLY, AND PROPERTY › CHAPTER 169 — MILITARY CONSTRUCTION AND MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING › SUBCHAPTER IV — ALTERNATIVE AUTHORITY FOR ACQUISITION AND IMPROVEMENT OF MILITARY HOUSING › § 2881a
The Secretary in charge may hire private companies to build or buy unaccompanied military housing inside the United States and its territories. Service members without dependents can be assigned to that housing, and it will count as official military quarters for pay rules. The Secretary of Defense may pay higher partial basic housing allowances for members living in these privatized units, and can send that pay straight to the private housing provider if the provider applies it against the member’s rent. Money for this must come from the Department of Defense Military Unaccompanied Housing Improvement Fund. With 30 days prior notice to the proper congressional committees in an electronic medium, funds from military construction accounts may be moved into that Fund and used for the same purposes and time periods. The authority to make these contracts ends September 30, 2029.
