§492b Biannual Briefing on Nuclear Weapons and Related Activities

Summary

Officials must give briefings to the Senate and House Armed Services Committees on or about May 1 and November 1 each year. The briefings cover nuclear weapons policy, operations, technology development, and other similar topics the committees ask for. The briefers are six named Defense and NNSA officials, including the Assistant Secretaries for Acquisition, for Nuclear Deterrence/ Chemical/ Biological Defense Policy and Programs, and for Space Policy; the NNSA Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs; the Joint Staff Director for Strategy, Plans, and Policy; and the U.S. Strategic Command Director for Capability and Resource Integration. Each official may delegate the briefing to a Senior Executive Service member who reports to them. The requirement ends on January 1, 2028.
