Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle A— General Military Law › Part II— PERSONNEL › Chapter 31— ENLISTMENTS › § 516
If an enlisted member accepts an appointment as a cadet at the United States Military Academy, United States Air Force Academy, or United States Coast Guard Academy, or as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy or in the Navy Reserve, their enlistment or service obligation does not end. While at an academy they get only the pay and benefits for cadets or midshipmen (or Navy Reserve midshipman pay). If they leave the academy for any reason other than becoming an officer in a regular or reserve branch of the armed forces (including the Space Force) or because of a physical disability, they go back to enlisted status and must finish their enlistment. Time spent as a cadet or midshipman counts toward that enlistment.
