When a job opens or is expected to open for Commander of a combatant command or for Commander, United States Forces, Korea, the Secretary of Defense must make the military secretaries send candidates. The Secretary of the Army must send at least one Army officer; the Secretary of the Navy must send at least one Navy officer and one Marine Corps officer; the Secretary of the Air Force must send at least one Air Force officer and one Space Force officer. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff may also send extra names. When those names are sent, the Chairman must give an evaluation of each officer being considered. The evaluation should mainly cover the officer’s work on the Joint Staff and in other joint duty jobs, but may include other performance matters the Chairman thinks are important.
