§6122 Manufacturing Infrastructure for Refabrication and Certification of Nuclear Weapons Stockpile

Summary

The Secretary of Energy must run a government program to build and keep the factories, tools, and skills needed for the nuclear weapons stockpile. The program must provide engineering for stockpile checks, re‑make and approve weapon parts and types in the enduring stockpile when needed, build and approve new warheads if needed, support nuclear weapons overall, and supply enough tritium so the stockpile can be increased if circumstances require. It must also develop the manufacturing capacity called for in the yearly Nuclear Weapons Stockpile Memorandum. The infrastructure must include modernized capabilities at Pantex (weapons assembly and high‑explosives work), Y–12 in Oak Ridge (weapon secondary fabrication), the Savannah River Site (tritium recycling and processing), the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility and Los Alamos National Laboratory (fissile material processing and fabrication), and the Kansas City National Security Campus (non‑nuclear component work).
