The President can cancel a promotion to brigadier general or rear admiral (lower half) if the officer has served less than 18 months in that rank after being promoted under this chapter. If the promotion is canceled, the officer goes back to colonel (regular or reserve) for Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps officers, or to captain (regular or reserve) for Navy officers. Their spot on the active‑duty list is the same one they would have held if they had never been promoted.
