Officers who are regular major generals in the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force, and regular rear admirals in the Navy, must be retired if they are not already. They retire on either the first day of the month after their fifth anniversary in that rank or the first day of the month after they reach 35 years of active commissioned service, whichever comes later, unless other rules allow a different date. If such an officer is serving as a lieutenant general or vice admiral, the service-length trigger is 38 years. If serving as a general or admiral, the trigger is 40 years.
