Allows a military department secretary to let an officer ranked above O–2 stay on active duty past the date they would normally be separated or retired under sections 632, 633, 634, 635, or 636 if the officer’s job specialty, rating, or specialty code is one the secretary has picked for continuation. Each military department must name which job specialties qualify and must follow rules set by the Secretary of Defense. An officer kept on active duty this way must retire on the first day of the month after they complete 40 years of active service, unless they retire earlier.
