The Secretary of the Army must pick an Inspector General from the Army’s general officers. The job tour is up to four years, but the Secretary may extend it if the Secretary finds an extension is needed in the public interest. When the Secretary or the Chief of Staff directs, the Inspector General must look into and report on the Army’s discipline, efficiency, and economy and carry out other assigned duties. The Inspector General must also regularly propose inspection programs and suggest extra inspections or investigations. The Inspector General must fully cooperate with the Department of Defense Inspector General on any duties under chapter 4 of title 5 that involve the Army. The Inspector General will have deputies and assistants chosen by the Secretary. Each deputy or assistant must be an Army officer detailed for tours of not more than four years under a Secretary-prescribed procedure.
