Under rules set by the Secretary of Defense, the appropriate military Secretary may give eligible service members up to 15 days of rest and recuperation (R&R) leave and government-paid round-trip travel from the combat area. To qualify, a member must be assigned or deployed at least 270 days in a location the President has designated a combat zone and where hardship duty pay under 37 U.S.C. 305 or 352(a) is allowed, and meet any other criteria the Secretary of Defense sets. These R&R benefits are in addition to any other leave the member has.
