Defines key words used for the Navy and Marine Corps rules in this subtitle. Navy: the United States Navy, including the Regular Navy, Fleet Reserve, and Navy Reserve. Marine Corps: the United States Marine Corps, including the Regular Marine Corps, Fleet Marine Corps Reserve, and Marine Corps Reserve. Member of the naval service: a person appointed, enlisted, inducted, or conscripted into the Navy or Marine Corps. Enlisted member: someone serving in an enlisted grade or rating. Officer: someone serving in a commissioned or warrant officer grade. Commissioned officer: someone serving above warrant officer W–1. Warrant officer: someone serving in a warrant officer grade. Officer restricted in the performance of duty: an officer assigned to engineering, aeronautical engineering, special duty, or limited duty roles. If a member has a temporary appointment in a higher grade, they are treated as serving in that higher grade unless the subtitle says otherwise.
