Navy line officers who are designated naval aviators or naval flight officers and who meet other qualifications may command aircraft carriers and aircraft tenders, except for nuclear-powered carriers taken out of service for permanent decommissioning and disposal. Naval aviation schools, air stations, and tactical aviation units must be commanded by officers of the same service (Navy or Marine Corps) who are naval aviators or naval flight officers.
