The President must assign an officer to be the Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy. The Superintendent is in charge of running the Academy. Before taking the job, the officer must agree that when the assignment ends they will be retired under section 8371(a) of this title, unless retirement is waived under section 8371(b) of this title. An officer must serve as Superintendent for at least three years. If the officer leaves or is reassigned before completing three years (other than by death), the Secretary of the Navy must tell Congress and explain why the service was shorter.
