§9784 Air Force and Space Force Museum System

Summary

The Secretary of the Air Force must maintain an official Air Force and Space Force museum system in the Department. It must include the National Museum of the United States Air Force and can include other museums the Secretary approves if they are historically important, open to the public with education programs, and help preserve Air and Space heritage. The Secretary must also set rules for closing a museum. A museum cannot close until the Secretary notifies the House and Senate Armed Services Committees with a plan for preserving or re‑displaying the collections, how staff issues will be handled, any public‑private partnership efforts, and a cost analysis for moving and preserving the collections, and 90 days pass after the committees receive that notice. The Secretary may form partnerships, including with nonprofits, to help fund and run the museums.
