Under the Secretary of Defense's direction, the Secretary of the Air Force can settle and accept payment for U.S. claims for damage to property the Air Force controls or agreed to handle. This applies when the claim is one a maritime court would hear or when damage was caused by a ship or floating object, and the payment is $500,000 or less. After payment, the Secretary can sign away the claim and must turn the money over to the Treasury. For payments of $100,000 or less, the Secretary may let another Air Force official do this.
