Up to four Deputy Comptrollers of the Currency are appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury, with one named First Deputy; the Secretary sets their pay. Each deputy must take an oath, carry out the Comptroller’s orders, and fill the Comptroller’s role in the succession order the Comptroller sets if the Comptroller is absent, disabled, or the office is vacant.
