The President can appoint professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and instructors to the Coast Guard Academy, but those appointments need Senate approval. If someone is hired for the first time and has not previously served in the Coast Guard in one of the listed roles, the appointment is temporary until they complete a four-year probationary period; after satisfactory service they can be made permanent, with their permanent rank dated from the start of the temporary appointment.
