Regular Coast Guard officers appointed under section 2101 who are lieutenant (junior grade) and fail selection for promotion to lieutenant a second time must be honorably discharged on June 30 of that promotion year. They can ask to be discharged earlier and keep the benefits they would have had on June 30. If they are eligible for retirement under any law on the discharge date, they will be retired instead.
