The Secretary can give an enlisted member a bonus of up to $20,000 for finishing training in a skill marked as critical, if the member still has at least four years of active duty left when the training ends. The bonus can be paid all at once or in smaller payments. If a member leaves early on their own or is discharged for misconduct, the Secretary can make them pay back a proportional part of the bonus. Interest can be added. The interest rate is set every quarter and equals 150% of the average yield on 91-day Treasury bills from the prior calendar quarter.
