Unclaimed money, keepsakes, papers, and other personal items of deceased Coast Guard members must be kept in safe storage. If they are not claimed within two years of the person’s death, the items may be sold and the money put into the U.S. Treasury as miscellaneous receipts. The Secretary must try hard to find heirs or next of kin and make rules for this process. Claims can be filed any time within five years after the money or sale proceeds go into the Treasury. If a claim is supported by proof after deposit, it will be sent to Congress for review.
