The Secretary must pay reasonable travel costs for an eligible beneficiary who lives on an island in the 48 contiguous States and the District of Columbia that has no public roads to the mainland. A parent, guardian, or family member age 21 or older can also be paid when an adult must accompany the beneficiary. Payment applies if a primary care doctor sends the beneficiary to a mainland specialist less than 100 miles away, or if the Coast Guard regional medical manager finds needed TRICARE primary, specialty, or dental care is not available on the island. Definitions: covered beneficiary — eligible person; specialty care provider — specialist; TRICARE program — military health network.
