§2924 Child Development Center Employees

Summary

The Commandant must set up a training program for Coast Guard child development center workers, and finishing that program is required to be hired. New employees must complete the training within 6 months of being hired. The training must teach early childhood development, age‑appropriate activities and discipline, how to prevent and spot child abuse and neglect, and CPR and other emergency medical skills. The Commandant can use Department of Defense courses, paid or unpaid, to meet this requirement. Each center must have at least 1 training and curriculum specialist with the right credentials and experience. That specialist must do special teaching, coach and oversee other staff daily, help make lesson plans, help with abuse prevention and detection, and advise the center director about staff performance. The specialist must be a competitive service employee (hired through the regular federal hiring process).
