The Commandant may enroll certain U.S. citizens — Auxiliary members, some boat officers or crew, and some government employees who get no extra pay — as temporary members of the Reserve. They serve under rules the Commandant sets, including part‑time or intermittent duty, with or without pay and regardless of age. The Commandant can give them Reservist ranks and duties, and when they are on paid active duty they receive the pay and allowances of that rank.
