§3709 Reserve Student Aviation Pilots; Reserve Aviation Pilots; Appointments in Commissioned Grade

Summary

Under rules set by the Secretary, an enlisted member of the Reserve can be made a student aviation pilot. If the member is not already a qualified aviator, they must agree in writing to serve on active duty for two years after finishing flight training unless released sooner. Student pilots can be released or discharged under those rules. The government pays for uniforms and equipment. A qualified civilian aviator may get a short refresher course. After successful training, a student can be made an aviation pilot. In peacetime, someone who agreed to the two-year duty may be kept on for up to two more years. An aviation pilot may be released or discharged under the rules, and, if qualified, may be appointed as an ensign in the Reserve.
