Under rules the Secretary sets, enlisted Reserve members can be made student aviation pilots. If they are not already qualified, they must sign a written promise to serve two years on active duty after finishing flight training unless released sooner. Student pilots can be released or discharged under the Secretary’s rules. Qualified civilian pilots may get a short refresher course. The Government pays for uniforms and equipment. After successful training they may be made aviation pilots and, if qualified under the rules, appointed ensigns. In peacetime the two-year duty can be extended up to two more years.
