Title 14 › Subtitle SUBTITLE III— COAST GUARD RESERVE AND AUXILIARY › Chapter 37— COAST GUARD RESERVE › Subchapter II— PERSONNEL › § 3739
Reserve officers on active duty (not just for training, board work, or short temporary duty) must be considered for promotion under chapter 21, not under this subchapter. If one is promoted while on active duty, the promotion is treated as if it came from this subchapter and the officer counts as an extra person in that grade for distributing authorized grades. When released from active duty, the officer is put into the authorized grade distribution. If an officer was already selected for promotion under this subchapter before reporting for active duty, the officer will be promoted under chapter 21 when they report. If an officer is selected under chapter 21 at the time of release from active duty, the promotion will be treated the same as a selection under this subchapter. A failure to be selected for promotion under either system counts the same for all purposes.
