Title 14 › Subtitle SUBTITLE III— COAST GUARD RESERVE AND AUXILIARY › Chapter 37— COAST GUARD RESERVE › Subchapter II— PERSONNEL › § 3753
Reserve officers who are not on active duty must leave regular Reserve service when they turn 60. If they are eligible for retirement, they are moved into the Retired Reserve that day. If they are not eligible for retirement, they are discharged on their 60th birthday. Reserve officers who are on active duty follow the same rules but at age 62 instead: eligible officers are retired at 62, others are discharged at 62. The Secretary can allow a Reserve rear admiral (either grade) to stay on active status until they turn 64. The Secretary can also allow Reserve health professions officers to stay on active status until the first day of the month after the month they turn 68. That medical group includes doctors, nurses, physician assistants, therapists, lab and pharmacy staff, dental staff, and other medical or dental personnel the Secretary names. Allowing these extensions does not change any rules about mandatory separations or disciplinary actions. For this law, "active duty" does not mean active duty for training, duty on a board, or short-term or temporary active duty when coming from inactive status.
