Title 14 › Subtitle SUBTITLE III— COAST GUARD RESERVE AND AUXILIARY › Chapter 39— COAST GUARD AUXILIARY › § 3912
Auxiliary members do not get Coast Guard or Reserve powers just for being members. They can be given duties after they complete required training and testing. They cannot be put in charge of a motorboat, yacht, aircraft, or radio station on Coast Guard duty unless the Commandant specifically names them. When assigned and not limited by the Commandant, they have the same authority as regular Coast Guard personnel for that work. The Secretary may pay travel costs and a per diem instead of subsistence when they are away from home. No per diem is paid if the government provides lodging and meals or while serving on a vessel.
