The Secretary can mark sunken vessels or other hazards in U.S. navigable waters and waters above the continental shelf when needed. Owners must pay the marking costs until the obstruction is removed, legally abandoned, or the Secretary decides otherwise; payments go to the U.S. Treasury. Owners still must mark or remove the hazard if law requires.
