Certain commissioned and warrant officers in the Coast Guard may act like a notary public under rules set by the Commandant. They can give oaths and notarize documents for Coast Guard duties, during war or national emergency, and in Alaska or places outside the continental United States where the Coast Guard serves. They may not charge any fee. Their signature and rank are taken as proof they have that authority.
