Title 15 › Chapter 40— DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE › § 1537
The Secretary of Commerce must finish an evaluation of NOAA’s environmental data and information systems within 12 months after October 29, 1992, and at least every two years after that. The evaluation must check whether NOAA can manage, store, and share current and future environmental data; build and keep information systems that let data be used the same way; link NOAA’s systems with other agencies; use national data formats and standards; and combine data from different sources into useful information for policy makers. The Secretary must also create and send a 10-year modernization plan, based on that evaluation, to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology within the same timeframes. The plan must set 10-year goals (including needed facilities and technology), list programs and actions to meet them, explain NOAA’s data roles with other federal and international groups (including the Earth Observing System Data and Information System), and give a schedule and cost estimates.
