Title 15 › Chapter 6— WEIGHTS AND MEASURES AND STANDARD TIME › Subchapter II— METRIC CONVERSION › § 205b
The United States designates the metric system as the preferred system of weights and measures for U.S. trade and commerce. Each Federal agency must, when it makes economic sense, use the metric system in purchases, grants, and other business activities by the end of fiscal year 1992, unless it is impractical or would cause big inefficiencies or lost markets (for example, when foreign competitors use non‑metric units). The government must also promote understanding of the metric system through education and government publications, while allowing traditional systems to keep being used for non‑business activities.
